The Archives of Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East Damascus, V. 1 was published by the Antiochian Center for Archiving and Documentation at the University of Balamand in 2001.They include paper documents that constitute part of the history of Damascus and its residents. They consist of correspondence between the patriarchs, the congregation and the priests related to inheritance , marriage, divorce, missionary work, teaching, transgressions, military service, appointments , compensations, change of religion, priesthood, taxes, sectarian disturbances, marital and social problems, deaths, births, endowments…..….. They have all been cataloged to show size and kind of paper, as well as the size and type of handwriting, and the ink used. An abstract of each paper is also provided. There are indexes showing sources, names of clerical writers and the subjects. The introduction is by Patriarch Ignatius IV who blessed this great unprecedented work in the church. “The Antiochian Archives and their Importance” is a title of an article in the book by dr. abdel Karim Rafeq, Professor of the Modern History of the Arabs and previous head of the History Department at the |University of Damascus. This volume includes 1400 documents about Damascus. The indexes were prepared by Dr. Joseph Zaytoun.
